Marine digital book reviews

Hello folks, thanks for reading my reviews.  After nearly 60 years of boating myself I am always looking for how-to and do it yourself books and plans. Here are my favorite three available in digital books. Instant access and good prices make getting started on your marine project much easier. Or if you prefer to purchase your boat,  I highly recommend the auction club offered below a little more work than usual to make a purchase but the savings can be fantastic!

Build a Dory

William gives this digital book 4.5 out of a 5 star rating.

The dory can be defined as a small boat which has

  • a flat bottom, with the bottom planks fastened lengthwise (bow to stern).
  • a hull shape defined by the natural curve of a sawn plank (never steam bent).
  • planks overlapping the stem at the front of the boat and an outer 'false' stem covering the hood ends of the planks.
  • (with some exceptions) a fairly narrow transom often referred to as the 'tombstone' due to its unique shape.

Despite their simplicity of design, dories are well known for their seaworthiness and rowing ease. Because of their narrow bottoms, they do not exhibit much initial stability and have often been called 'tippy'. They exhibit high ultimate stability, however, tipping to a point and then stiffening up significantly and resisting further rolling tendencies. Dories by design are quite voluminous and can carry a heavy load for their size and will continue to retain their great ultimate stability even when heavily loaded.

The hull form is characterized by a bottom that is transversely flat and sometimes bowed fore-and-aft. (This curvature is known as 'rocker'.) The stern is frequently a raked surface (a narrow transom) that tapers sharply toward the bottom forming a nearly double-ended boat. The traditional bottom is made from planks laid fore and aft and not transverse, although some hulls have a second set of planks laid over the first in a pattern that is crosswise to the main hull for additional wear and strength.

Features and Bonuses:
1.   Practical guide, great price.

2.  Testimony from Wilbert Weir.
I have been building wooden boats all of my life. I know every dory cut and angle inside and out and have built em in all shapes and sizes. The plans offered here are based upon my many years of boat building experience and I know you will have many hours of enjoyment building and using your Grand Banks Dory.

3. And we discuss every building step in an easy to understand conversational language...You won't need a dictionary to build your boat!

How to operate a boat with twin props

William gives this digital book  4 out of  5 stars.

Captain Reichert has logged over 100,000 nautical miles operating twin screw vessels. During that time, he trained personnel to maneuver and safely operate commercial U.S. Coast Guard inspected and certified passenger vessels that had twin screws and twin rudders.

It became obvious to him that the students did not understand what forces were being exerted beneath the vessel when a maneuver was being executed. It seemed that no matter how comprehensive the explanation, it had little or no meaning to the person involved.

Captain Reichert drew a crude set of visual aids in the form of flash cards and sent them home with the students. Overnight the rate of improvement in every student was very noticeable and the students soon were maneuvering the vessel with much more accuracy and understanding.

Several years and much thought later, Captain Reichert decided to improve upon his method and to offer it in the form of a FLASHBOOK for sale to the public.  The simple, yet understandable form is a TUTOR for the beginner or the professional who constantly strives to hone his or her skills.  The illustrations in the learning manual are plain and give the impression of looking down through a glass bottomed boat.

Features and Bonuses:
1. A simple & complete system used at the helm or ashore.

2. Easy to understand the actions and results of rudder and throttle manipulation.

3. With this Flashbook method you can learn to control any twin screw vessel.

3. Testimony from Allen Strobin

I went shopping for a ski boat for my family last year.
After hours of driving, talking to salesmen and online research we came to the sad conclusion that a boat was unaffordable.

Then about a month later I ran into an old friend who was towing a nice fishing boat. Wondering how he could afford such a nice boat on his salary I jokingly asked him if he had won the lottery. He turned me on to this web site and now we have the boat and much more.
